Do phones belong in the classroom?

Albert Atri

Phones get a bad reputation in school, but I believe they do belong in the classroom when used the right way. As an 8th grader, I see phones as tools, not just distractions. Instead of banning them completely, schools should teach students how to use them responsibly during class.

First, phones can actually help students learn. If we don’t understand a word, topic, or problem, teachers sometimes let us quickly look it up. Phones can also be used for educational apps, timers for assignments, taking pictures of notes, or checking grades. In today’s world, technology is everywhere and learning how to use it properly in school prepares us for the future.

Second, phones can be important for safety and communication. If there is an emergency or a family issue, having a phone nearby makes students feel more secure. It also helps parents stay in contact when needed. Taking phones away completely can cause stress for both students and parents.

Some people argue that phones are too distracting, and that is true sometimes. However, that doesn’t mean phones should be banned. Schools already have rules for behavior, and phone rules can be added too. Teachers can decide when phones are allowed and when they should be put away. Learning self-control is an important life skill, and school is the perfect place to practice it.

In conclusion, phones do belong in the classroom if they are used responsibly. Instead of treating phones like the enemy, schools should treat them like tools. With clear rules and trust, phones can support learning, safety, and responsibility for students like me.
