Review of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

Alberto Civale and Gabriel De Franca

Lord of the Rings is a story following a humble hobbit, Frodo Baggins, on a dangerous quest to destroy a dangerous ring called the One Ring bestowed upon him by Bilbo Baggins (his uncle) and Gandalf (his wizard friend) which created by the Dark Lord Sauron, the Ring grants immense power but corrupts whoever wears it.

 Gollum’s Backstory

Smeagol was the average humble hobbit but one day when he was fishing with his friend and suddenly his friend caught a fish and it dragged him into the water with surprising force. The fish led him to the One Ring buried under the sand. The two wrestled on the ground for several minutes. Eventually Smeagol choked out and killed his friend and claimed the ring himself.

Rating: 9/10

This is because of the buildup in the past movies showing Smeagol's transformation to becoming Gollum. This answered our question on how Smeagol found the ring and what led him to become the way he is now. Additionally, this scene wasn’t perfect because there wasn’t a lot of information about who his friend was.

Charge at Black Gate

A desperate, final charge led by Aragorn to get rid of Sauron’s armies, allowing Frodo to destroy the One Ring. With only 6,000 men, the Host of the West faces a much bigger army to buy time for the Ringbearer. The battle features the Mouth of Sauron, who taunts Aragorn with Frodo’s mithril shirt before the army’s clash.

Rating: 9/10

Aragorn led just 6,000 men against at least 60,000 enemies, meaning they were outnumbered 10 to 1 which is a total suicide mission.

It’s 10/10 because they knew they couldn’t win, yet they chose to fight just to give Frodo enough time to reach Mount Doom.

Siege of Minas Tirith

A huge event in Lord of the Rings where Sauron’s army attacked Gondor’s Capital destroying its defenses and bringing down the Great Gate with Grond a massive battering ram used to take it down. Soon came the arrival of Rohan’s Army and as well as Aragorn turning the tide of the battle at the battle of the pelennor fields.

Rating: 10/10

We rate this scene 10/10 because of the overwhelming comeback from Rohan’s Army and the way Gandalf leads his defense into battle. Another key point that spiked our rating was when Aragorn led the oathbreakers into battle, making it a legendary scene.

The Destruction of the Ring at Mount Doom

The One Ring was made with a portion of Sauron's power and the only way it could be destroyed was by dropping it in the Volcano in Mount Doom in the same place it was created by Sauron. While Sam and Frodo were climbing up, Gollum appeared once again attacking them in an attempt to steal the ring from them. Fortunately, once they arrived at the entrance of the volcano, Gollum retrieved the ring and fell with it into the lava. Frodo ended up hanging by the platform inside the volcano after battling with Gollum, and he had to make a hard decision to either fall to be with the ring or climb back up and survive where he did end up surviving.

Rating: 10/10

We think this part was one of the best in Return of the King, showing Frodo overcoming the evil power from the ring. This was the ending we were all hoping for, so therefore we gave it a 10/10.
