Is Bitcoin a good long-term investment like the SPY?

Nathan Domfrocht

In early 2026, the SPY and Bitcoin faced very different situations. While the SPY remained relatively strong because it is backed by many different types of companies, Bitcoin experienced a major price drop. This crash was caused by a mix of people worrying about new technology, changes in government rules, and big investors selling their holdings all at once.

One major reason for the Bitcoin fall was a shift in "investor sentiment," which is just a fancy way of saying people got nervous. Investors started moving their money out of risky things like crypto and into safer options like the SPY or even gold. Because Bitcoin isn’t backed by a physical business like the companies in the S&P 500, its price can drop much faster when people lose confidence.

Another big factor was that many big companies and "ETFs" began selling their Bitcoin in February 2026. This created a "chain reaction" where the price kept falling, which then forced even more people to sell their coins to avoid losing everything. The SPY didn't have this problem because its value is spread across 500 different businesses, so one bad week doesn't ruin the whole investment.

The 2026 drop also happened because people were worried about high interest rates and new laws that might make it harder to use digital money. When the government talks about making new rules for crypto, it often makes the price "wiggle" or crash. In contrast, the SPY follows companies that have been around for a long time and already know how to follow the rules, making it less likely to have a sudden 20% drop.

Even with this recent fall, some people still believe Bitcoin is a good long-term bet, but it requires a lot of patience. If you had invested in the SPY during this same time, you probably would have seen much smaller changes in your account. This recent event is a great example of why it is often safer to have a steady foundation in the stock market rather than putting everything into one digital coin.
